Victorian Black Beaded Cape or Shrug / Black Silk Evening Jacket Capelet / 19th c. Fringed Cloak Mantle /S
Exquisite piece from the Victorian era, a pelerine is a mantlet that was a convenient choice for a lady who needed something over her shoulders without the bulkiness of a jacket, or a full cape. This is a sort of evening wrap with a high, stand up collar and hook closure down the front, hidden by an ornate band of beading. The same ornate bands are found on either side of the front panel, going over the shoulders and then down the sides of the back. They feature little barrel beads offset by hanging beads of black glass in the shape of arrow tips/triangles. The shoulders have bands of dispersed barrel beds in sets of three and ornate fringe made from the same beading. Note the center back that has a flourish or decorous and sumptuous beadwork plus more fringe. Interior is fully lined. Note that originally, the black belt sash was worn on the interior, just under the front panel, but we took the liberty of styling it on the outside, to emphasize the waistline.
Fits like an Small to XS
Across the chest, doubled 27"
Length from shoulder to hem, at front 24 1/2"
Condition: incredible for a piece that's over 100 years old and with the kind of handbeading, but it is being sold AS IS, because the trim panels that are on both the front and back sides of the torso have some missing beads, especially along the edges. This does in no way detract from wearability as there is enough going on to keep this piece dazzling. You would only notice if you looked closely, looking for the gaps. No tears, or stains, or other imperfections.
