January Fashion Morsels

2025!

The calendar year has turned and this year marks FIFTEEN YEARS of RareJule Vintage - a business I started when I was spending most of my days as a homeschooling mom, posting on Etsy and shipping orders at naptime!

Back in the day

The April issue will be devoted to chronicling the early history of this crazy undertaking - years before "thrifting" became a verb.

Here's a sneakpeek  of my first  workspace in the basement of our Morton Grove bungalow.

Ruben Toledo illustrations in blue, Ikea frames!

For now, scroll down for the usual mix of  arcane fashion lore and shameless self-promotion, including news of a new-to-me vintage market happening in February!

AN EXHIBIT NOT TO MISS

The Museum of FIT, New York City - Fashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities    provides the first in-depth exploration of the fascinating connections between cabinets of curiosities and fashion. Also known as wunderkammern in German, cabinets of curiosities can be traced back to the early 16th century. They were precursors to the modern museum, and many included examples of clothing. The exhibition features nearly 200 garments and accessories, almost exclusively selected from MFIT's permanent collection, which are inspired by the breadth of objects collected within the cabinets.
Opens February 19, 2025. Runs through April 20, 2025

A NEW OLD WAY TO KEEP YOUR HEAD WARM

Bonnets are the go-to hat for this winter! (How vintage!).
Knitting your own is one step better! I still have the ones knitted by my grandma for my babies!

See how @Atelierstovar styled hers with a super darling 1940s look!

Our version is less baby bonnet and more mod! It's a 60s Peck &Peck in brown wool!

THE COLOR AU COURANT

2025 has been pronounced the year of beige. Hmmm. Here is one take on the trend:
The Sad Beige Aesthetic .

I will admit, though I prefer bold colors and striking prints, there is a calming "disappear into the background" mood that can be interesting. Here are two from my current collection that I am loving.

And since we are talking suits, check out Gem's article, Five Trends to Shop Secondhand This Spring, which features another great pant suit from my shop. And, yes, those pink shoes ARE available

Pantone voted Mocha Mousse the color of the year  - beige's older, saucier, second cousin. As exemplified in this early 2000s Michael Kors dress from my collection.

FASHION WORLD'S FIRST LOSS OF THE YEAR

Goodbye to Missoni founder Rosita Missoni who died at age 93 on January 2nd.

Many of you know Missoni as the Italian innovator and purveyor of colorful knitwear favoring zig-zag patterns, since the 1960s. Older Missoni pieces are not easy to find, so I have only had a few come through my shop.

A small retrospective -

And, lastly, some thoughts on
