*Sibyl Connolly (1908-1998) was an influential Irish fashion designer who became internationally renowned for transforming traditional Irish textiles into haute couture. Born in Wales but raised in Ireland, Connolly began her career in London before returning to Dublin in the 1940s to establish her own fashion house. She revolutionized Irish fashion by elevating humble materials like linen and lace into elegant, sophisticated garments, most famously creating her signature pleated linen dresses that required up to nine yards of fabric. Her work gained international acclaim when it was featured in American Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in the 1950s, leading to successful fashion shows in New York and a clientele that included Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor. Connolly's influence extended beyond fashion into interior design and lifestyle, and she played a crucial role in establishing Ireland's reputation in the global fashion industry while preserving and modernizing traditional Irish craftsmanship techniques. Her work is found in museums around the world, most notably at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: https://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/105283
