Donald Brooks used his Boutique label for only three years, 1971 to 1973, which dates this gown about as precisely as an unlabeled piece can be dated. It is cut from heavy black rayon jersey that hangs rather than clings, with a bloused halter bodice fastening at the nape — and then the back simply stops. Open to the waist. No panel, no hidden mesh.
The skirt drops in a straight column from the natural waist to a 62 inch sweep. Two black satin ribbons run off the waist, long enough to wrap several times, and they are what set the fit through the bodice. Fully lined, zipper at the back of the skirt. Fifty-odd years on, not a mark on it.
