From the collectible, British boho designer Janice Wainwright, this is a black viscose chiffon maxi with the embroidery she was known for: autumn leaves and birds in red, silver and brown across a bloused V-neck bodice, sheer butterfly wing sleeves, and an embroidered capelet panel that falls across the back.
Silver braided trim edges the neckline, the belt, the hip pockets (yes, pockets), and most prominently the hem of the capelet. Elastic waist with a matching sash tie. Pulls on overhead. Body and skirt are lined in a second layer of black chiffon; the sleeves are left sheer on purpose.
Wainwright trained at the Royal College of Art alongside Ossie Clark and was one of the few designers allowed to use Celia Birtwell's prints. From 1970 she worked under her own name at 47 Poland Street in Soho, where the bias-cut chiffons and embroidered birds and flowers became her signature; from about 1974 the label carries her name alone.
