This is a 1980s Galanos dress in heavy black silk crepe, and it appears never to have been worn. Galanos was the American couturier, the one who dressed Nancy Reagan and Grace Kelly from his Los Angeles house, and his day dresses were finished to the same standard as his gowns. This one shows it: every seam, tuck and hem is done the way a couture workroom does it.
The upper body is severe on purpose. A mock neck sits above a gathered shoulder yoke, the shoulders are structured with pads, and the long dolman sleeves narrow to zippered cuffs that hug the wrist. Below the drop waist the mood changes: the skirt is built from dense, even bands of horizontal pintucks, and the hem finishes in a double tier of black satin ruffle. Plain above, worked below.
