Dazzling fruit embroidery at chest captures the eye right away: strawberries, cherries and a bunch of grapes, and then — because Holly Harp was like that — a pair of lemons on the upper back, where only the person behind you will ever see them. A row of black beaded fringe hangs below.
The cloth is a cream silk jersey light enough to pour. It pulls on overhead, opens into a scoop neck and short butterfly sleeves, and drops two long front panels that wrap and tie at the waist into a sash as wide as you care to make it. Untied, it hangs to 54 inches at the longest point. Tied, it becomes a top. Unlined throughout.
The label reads Holly Harp for I. Magnin. Harp opened her Los Angeles boutique in 1968 and began manufacturing under her own name in 1973, working through the early nineties in draped and hand-painted silk; she was twice nominated for the Coty Award, did costumes for films like Cabaret, Sleeper and The Turning Point, and turned up in the Metropolitan Museum's Goddess exhibition in 2003.
