Vintage 1980s Thierry Mugler Dress Runway Collection Plaid Linen Wrap Hidden Fringe Belted Midi FR 38

Mugler built a secret into this one. What you see is a plaid linen wrap dress in muted green, gray and blue, cut the way he cut everything: hard shoulders, an oversized collar with wide notched lapels, a waist pulled in by a matching belt on a rectangular buckle. What you don't see, until it moves, is the 28 inch panel of fringe sewn beneath the wrap skirt, dyed in bands of blue and green that don't match the plaid so much as answer it. At rest it shows only as a whisper of blue at the hem and in the gaps between the skirt buttons. Walk, sit, or open the wrap, and it becomes the whole dress.

Three domed wood buttons cross the waist beneath the belt, with a second run of them descending the skirt front. Metal grommets sit open along the sides of the torso. Deep side pockets. Unlined, as linen this good should be.

The care tag carries Mugler's own production number, MODELE 2551-1, TISSU 0132, COLORIS 058, stamped beneath the blue Thierry Mugler Paris label over 100% lin, made in France. That places the dress in his main line, years before the couture house and the licensing that followed. It comes from the Spring/Summer 1985 runway collection. The dress is near enough to what came down the runway that the pattern is plainly the same. Whether this one walked, or was cut for the boutiques alongside it, I cannot yet verify.
