Vintage 40s Chicago Tribune Marian Martin Mail Order Sewing Pattern 2493

Asymmetric Draped Frock Dress Size 16 (vintage size - not equivalent with today's sizing, so see details) Bust 34

This is a 1940s mail-order unprinted tissue paper sewing pattern distributed by the Chicago Tribune Pattern Department, design number 2493. This pattern contains pieces and instructions to construct two variations of a misses' afternoon dress. The first view features an asymmetric, tiered wrap-effect skirt with a draped sarong-style overlay, a fitted bodice with modest shoulder gathers, a high neckline, and short cap sleeves. The second view features a pleated, diagonal surplice bodice treatment with a clean-line straight skirt. Pattern UNCUT/never used.

*Year/Season: Circa 1941–1943
**From the 30s through the 50s, regional newspapers like the Chicago Tribune did not manufacture their own sewing patterns. Instead, they partnered with central mail-order syndicates. Marian Martin (along with Anne Adams) was one of the largest proprietary brands managed by these syndicates (specifically Reader Mail, Inc.). To make readers feel like they were buying an exclusive product from their local paper, the syndicates printed custom mailing envelopes marked "Chicago Tribune Pattern Department". The pattern illustration sheet inside omitted the brand name entirely.
*** Marketed via small, single-column text advertisements in the newspapers where the ads featured a small line drawing of the dress alongside a brief description and a mail-in coupon.

Condition: New With Imperfections. Outer envelope sheet shows typical age-related toning, minor edge wear, and small corner creases consistent with archival storage. Interior tissue remains factory-folded and unused. Instruction fold-out sheet has tears as pictured.

REFUND POLICY: I do not refund based on issues of fit and size. Please check the measurements above carefully and compare them with a similar item you own that fits you the way you like. If you have any concerns, please send me a message. I love answering your questions!
