Gianni Versace, Spring/Summer 1979 Ready-to-Wear! This jungle parrots print belongs to Versace's second women's runway collection, shown one year after he launched his own label in 1978. Pieces from these first seasons are scarce in any condition. This one is excellent.
Print is a maximalist display of parrots, birds, and dense tropical foliage in pink, plum, lavender, and olive on a warm khaki silk ground. The dress is a slip-style silhouette with spaghetti straps, a plunging crossover V bodice, and a softly bloused waist over a flexible elasticated waistband. The skirt falls in asymmetrical tiers to a handkerchief hem that moves with every step. Sleeveless, unlined, pulls on over the head.
